Drowning in Tasks? It’s Time to Stop Majoring in Minor Things

Drowning in Tasks? It’s Time to Stop Majoring in Minor Things

January 23, 20262 min read

I hear it all the time—“There just aren’t enough hours in the day.”

You’re not alone. If you’re a business owner, manager, or entrepreneur, this is probably a familiar chorus. But here’s what most people miss: running out of time isn’t a time management problem. It’s a priority problem. It’s a leadership problem. And most of all—it’s a sign. A sign that something has to change.

Let me ask you a few questions. Be honest with yourself.

1. Are you majoring in minor things?

If your calendar is jammed from morning to night, but you’re still not seeing progress where it counts, you’re probably investing your energy in tasks that don’t move the needle. It’s easy to feel productive when you’re busy—but busy and effective aren’t the same thing. You need to start identifying what truly matters and eliminate, delegate, or diminish everything else.

2. Have you clearly defined your own highest and best use of time?

You may be holding onto responsibilities that made sense two years ago—but now, they’re anchors. I’ve seen countless leaders do this. Their business grows, but they stay stuck in outdated roles because they haven’t redefined their value. As your company scales, your role must evolve. Otherwise, you become the bottleneck.

3. Are you expecting enough from those around you?

This one cuts deep. If you’re constantly stepping in to fix small problems, that’s not leadership—it’s babysitting. Your time should be spent solving the 10% issues that only you can solve, not answering questions your team should be equipped to handle. If they’re not stepping up, it might be because your standards are too low, or your trust is too thin.

Now, here’s the uncomfortable truth: the longer you ignore these signs, the more they will cost you. Not just in revenue—but in time, energy, opportunity, and freedom. You can’t afford to keep playing small when your role—and your future—demands more.

At Leverage Consulting, I’ve helped hundreds of leaders restructure their time, redesign their roles, and rebuild expectations with their teams. And every single time, the result is the same: less stress, more growth, and real freedom.

So let me ask you again—are you majoring in minor things?

Because if you are, this isn’t about working harder. It’s about working smarter, leading better, and creating a business that doesn’t run on your exhaustion.

It’s time to make a shift.
